Al-Mashat: Egypt prioritizes intellectual property protection

Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, met with Dr. Hisham Azmy, Head of the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority, to discuss avenues for joint cooperation and the Ministry's support in implementing the National Intellectual Property Strategy.

The meeting focused on the Ministry's support for the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority's implementation of the National Intellectual Property Strategy through international cooperation, leveraging development partners' expertise. They also discussed a Korean-grant-funded project to develop an intellectual property automation system at the Egyptian Patent Office, and how to maximize its benefits given the Authority's expanded responsibilities.

Dr. Rania Al-Mashat highlighted the project's importance in fostering innovation and improving Egypt's business environment. She noted it would streamline patent registration and facilitate access to intellectual property information.

The Minister of Planning also addressed the Ministerial Group for Entrepreneurship and its efforts to enhance the startup ecosystem, including the development of a startup charter. She emphasized the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority's potential role in providing intellectual property awareness programs for startups.

The Minister stressed that entrepreneurship and intellectual property are crucial for economic development. She underscored the need for a supportive environment that promotes innovation and achieves national goals. Protecting intellectual property is vital for stimulating innovation, requiring the development of legislation and policies to safeguard innovators' rights and boost their competitiveness.

Finally, the meeting reviewed proposed projects for the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority, aimed at improving essential facilities and operational capacity. The importance of these projects in achieving the Authority's strategic objectives and supporting innovation was emphasized, to ensure efficient performance and high-quality service delivery.
