Egypt signs biogas, fertilizer protocol

Egypt signs biogas, fertilizer protocol

Assiut National Petroleum Company (ANOPC) and the Orman Association have signed a collaborative agreement to produce biogas and organic fertilizer. The project will be implemented in rural communities surrounding the solar power complex in Assiut Governorate.

The protocol was signed by Engineer Mohamed Badr El Din, Chairman of ANOPC, and Mamdouh Shaaban, Director General of the Orman Association. The signing ceremony was attended by Engineer Medhat Shaaban, Assistant Executive President of the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, Mohamed Hussein, Deputy Minister of Social Solidarity in Assiut Governorate, and officials from the social responsibility sector at the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

This biogas and organic fertilizer project aligns with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources' primary focus on environmental preservation.

It is expected that the biogas and organic fertilizer production project will achieve financial savings by providing an alternative biogas source to replace LPG cylinders, according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. The production of biogas from agricultural and animal waste represents one of the important solutions that villages rely on to address the shortage of electricity and gas.

This project employs a sustainable and cost-effective approach to waste management by converting organic materials, including agricultural residues, livestock manure, and food waste, into a renewable energy source. Through a process known as anaerobic digestion, these materials are decomposed in an oxygen-free environment to produce biogas, a gaseous mixture primarily composed of methane and carbon dioxide.

In December, a research team at the Energy Technology and Climate Change Laboratory in the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University succeeded in producing biogas similar to natural gas through the process of anaerobic co-digestion of agricultural waste, a biochemical process in which organic waste is placed in an oxygen-free environment and left for a certain period to allow a biological reaction to occur."

In a recent videoconference meeting, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla lauded Alexandria Mineral Oils Company (AMOC) for its pivotal role in ensuring Egypt's energy security. AMOC's production of essential petroleum products, including base oils and blended fuel oil, has been instrumental in meeting domestic demand and reducing reliance on imports. This recognition underscores AMOC's commitment to supporting the country's economic growth and energy independence.

In his remarks, AMOC Chairman and Managing Director Amr Lotfy emphasized that the company's performance indicators in the 2023-2024 fiscal year showed a noticeable development in production rates.
