Minister Shimi, SCATEC CEO discuss renewable energy projects

Minister of Public Business Sector, Engineer Mohamed Shimi, met, Wednesday, with Terry Nilsen, CEO of the Norwegian company "Scatec," on the sidelines of the Egypt International Energy Exhibition and Conference "EGYPES 2025." Also present were Ambassador Hilda Klemetdal, the Kingdom of Norway's ambassador to Cairo, and Mohamed Amer, Scatec's Vice President for the Middle East and Africa region.

The meeting discussed several investment opportunities within the Ministry's affiliated companies and reviewed the progress of joint projects. A key update was provided on the 1 gigawatt solar power plant project in Nagaa Hammadi. This plant will supply clean electricity to the aluminium complex, aligning with the state's push for renewable energy and industrial sustainability. Attendees included Engineer Mohamed El-Saadawy, Managing Director of the Holding Company for Metallurgical Industries, and Counselor Saeed Arafa, Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Public Business Sector.

At the start of the meeting, the Minister highlighted the strong bilateral relationship between Egypt and Norway, emphasizing the importance of further economic cooperation, particularly in renewable energy.

Engineer Mohamed Shimi underscored the value of international partnerships in clean energy, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals and Egypt's Vision 2030. He explained that the project is part of the government's strategy to lower carbon emissions and boost energy efficiency in key industries. He further stated that the project is a significant step toward sustainability in the aluminium sector, as it will lower operating costs and reduce the complex's carbon footprint, thereby improving the competitiveness of Egyptian industry in the global market.

The CEO of Scatec expressed the company's desire to deepen its cooperation with Egypt and emphasized its commitment to transferring advanced technology and delivering sustainable solutions to support the aluminium sector.

The Norwegian Ambassador commended the Egypt-Norway partnership in renewable energy and reiterated her country's support for investments that facilitate the transition to a green economy.
