African debt crisis tops upcoming G20 Summit with Egyptian participation

Assistant Foreign Minister Ambassador Ragy El Etreby, the President's Personal Representative to the G20 and BRICS, is participating in a meeting of G20 leaders' representatives this week in Johannesburg, South Africa. This inaugural meeting since South Africa assumed the G20 presidency will focus on the group's priorities and objectives for 2025.

El Etreby noted that Egypt's participation in the Johannesburg meetings follows an invitation from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for Egypt to participate in various G20 meetings, following South Africa's assumption of the group's presidency on December 1st until the end of November 2025. This marks Egypt's third consecutive year and fifth overall as a G20 participant, reflecting the group's recognition of Egypt's crucial role in addressing global economic and political challenges. Egypt's consistent involvement underscores its status as a key partner and a valuable contributor to regional stability and security.

The President's personal representative emphasized that the South African invitation to Egypt reflects the strong bilateral relations between the two countries, encompassing leadership, government, and their respective peoples. He explained that presidential directives mandate full support for South Africa during its G20 presidency. This aligns perfectly with the complete consensus between both nations on key priorities for the G20's upcoming discussions. These priorities center on taking concrete steps to reform the multilateral economic system, including its institutions and international mechanisms, to ensure a more equitable, balanced, and impactful global economic order.

Concluding his remarks, El Etreby expressed Egypt's unwavering confidence in the success of South Africa's G20 presidency. He emphasized South Africa's capacity to effectively advocate for key development issues of concern to the African continent within the G20 agenda during its tenure. These priorities include addressing the debt crisis, enhancing development finance, confronting the challenges of climate change, and promoting equitable representation for African nations within international economic institutions.
