Subaru unveiled the sixth-generation Forester in November 2023, featuring a larger engine than its predecessor. Now, the Japanese automaker is preparing to introduce a hybrid version of this popular compact SUV in the United States. Subaru confirmed that the Forester Hybrid will arrive by mid-2025.
The hybrid model will retain the Forester's familiar exterior design while incorporating minor updates, such as a distinctive hybrid badge on the tailgate.
Building upon Subaru's
all-wheel-drive heritage, the Forester Hybrid will offer improved fuel
efficiency and reduced emissions compared to the gasoline-powered model. It
will utilize the same self-charging hybrid system introduced in the Crosstrek
Hybrid in Japan last year. This system seamlessly transitions between the
gasoline engine and electric motors, optimizing performance and efficiency
based on driving conditions.
Powering the Forester Hybrid is a
2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. The primary
electric motor provides significant power assistance, while a secondary motor
acts as a generator, recharging the 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery. This system
enhances fuel economy without compromising the Forester's renowned all-weather
capability.
Subaru leveraged Toyota's
expertise in hybrid technology to develop this advanced powertrain. The new
system promises a 20% fuel economy improvement over Subaru's previous e-Boxer
hybrid system, which was unavailable in the U.S. market.
Pricing for the Forester Hybrid has not yet been announced, but it is expected to command a premium over the current gasoline-powered model, which starts at $29,695.
