South Korea is poised to achieve a significant milestone in the adoption of hybrid vehicles. Data released on Sunday indicates that the nation's registered hybrid car count is on track to surpass two million for the first time in 2024.
As of October, South Korea had 1,925,001 registered hybrid vehicles, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. If the current monthly pace of 40,000 new registrations continues, the two-million mark is expected to be reached before the year's end, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Since their local introduction in 2008, hybrid car
registrations have experienced steady growth. The 500,000 mark was surpassed in
2019, followed by one million in 2022 and 1.5 million last year.
With this expansion, environmentally friendly vehicles,
including electric, hydrogen, and hybrid cars, now account for 10% of total
vehicle registrations as of October. This is the first time this figure has reached
double digits.
As of October, there were 661,141 registered electric vehicles and 37,443 registered hydrogen vehicles. While the total share of environmentally friendly vehicles was a mere 0.9% in 2015, it has surged to 5% in 2022 and continues to grow rapidly.
