Tesla China, the Chinese subsidiary of the American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, announced today, Tuesday, the commencement of pilot production at its large battery manufacturing plant in Shanghai.
Tesla China had previously indicated that the construction of this substantial plant in Shanghai would be finalized by the end of the current year.
The Xinhua News Agency reported
that the plant, inaugurated in late May, will specialize in the production of
'Megapack' energy storage batteries.
Mass production at the plant is
slated to commence in the first quarter of next year, with an initial annual
production capacity of 10,000 units, equivalent to a total of 40
gigawatt-hours, according to the German News Agency.
The plant, spanning an area of
200,000 square meters, represents an investment of approximately 1.45 billion
yuan ($201.76 million USD), as reported by the administration of the Lingang
Special Area for Free Trade in Shanghai.
This significant plant marks Tesla's first battery manufacturing facility outside the United States and is the company's second production site in Shanghai following the inauguration of its large car plant in 2019.
