Kuwait is intensifying negotiations to secure additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, a strategic fuel essential for electricity generation, to address the growing domestic demand.
Recent power outages due to gas
supply disruptions have highlighted the country's urgent need for alternative
sources. Qatar, Kuwait's primary LNG supplier, has seen a 32.5% increase in
exports to the country in the first half of 2024.
To bolster energy security and
meet rising electricity demand, Kuwait is negotiating a 15-year LNG supply
agreement with QatarEnergy. This deal, sourced from the North Field project,
could increase Qatar's annual LNG exports to Kuwait to 6 million metric tons.
While Kuwait is actively pursuing
imported gas, it's also investing in domestic gas production to reduce its
reliance on external sources and support economic growth.
Despite these efforts, the country has faced challenges in meeting peak electricity demand during the summer months due to high temperatures and increased air conditioning usage. To mitigate these issues, Kuwait has implemented load shedding measures and urged citizens to conserve electricity.
