Minister of Electricity witnesses deal for two energy storage stations

Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, oversaw the signing of an agreement between the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and AMEA POWER (UAE) to build two energy storage plants with a combined capacity of 1,500 megawatt-hours. This initiative aligns with Egypt's strategy to increase renewable energy use, optimize its management and investment, and reduce traditional fuel consumption.

The agreement details AMEA POWER's development of two independent battery storage plants: a 500 megawatt-hour facility in Benban and a 1,000 megawatt-hour facility in Zaafarana. These plants, along with accompanying transformer stations and grid connections, will enhance the integration of renewable energy into Egypt's daily electricity supply and bolster the nation's sustainable development goals. The agreement was formalized by Engineer Mona Rizk, Chairperson of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and Engineer Aqil Bahra, Investment Officer of AMEA POWER.

Dr. Esmat highlighted the strategic importance of independent battery energy storage, aligning with Egypt's vision to maximize renewable energy utilization. These facilities will enable renewable energy discharge during peak demand, ensuring grid stability as more renewable sources are integrated. He explained that the plant locations in Benban and Zaafarana were strategically chosen through collaboration between the New and Renewable Energy Authority and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, supporting the goal of optimizing renewable energy returns, leveraging natural resources, and reducing fossil fuel reliance and carbon emissions. Dr. Esmat also emphasized that this project strengthens the existing partnership with AMEA POWER, a leading UAE renewable energy company.

He reaffirmed Egypt's dedication to renewable energy and its commitment to achieving national goals of reducing fossil fuel dependence and carbon emissions, as outlined in Egypt's Vision 2030 and the National Energy Strategy to 2040. He noted the recent Cabinet approval of an updated strategy, demonstrating the state's focus on sustainability and targeting 42% renewable energy in the energy mix by 2030 and 65% by 2040. He emphasized the electricity sector's accelerated efforts in solar and wind power projects, and underscored the critical role of expanded energy storage systems in ensuring a stable and sustainable electricity supply. He also praised the productive collaboration between AMEA POWER and Egypt’s electricity and renewable energy sector.
