ExxonMobil announced the discovery of potential natural gas reserves off the coast of Egypt. The company successfully drilled an exploratory well, named "Nefertari-1," in the North Maraquia block, located approximately five miles from Egypt's northern coast.
In a statement, the Texas-based energy giant revealed that gas-bearing formations were encountered during the drilling operation. ExxonMobil will now conduct further evaluations to assess the full extent of the discovery.
The Ministry of Petroleum and
Mineral Resources announced today that BP has completed drilling two wells at
the Revin gas field in the Mediterranean Sea.
The eastern Mediterranean has
emerged as a significant exploration hub in recent years, following several
major natural gas discoveries off the coast of Israel in 2009 and 2010. The
region's proximity to gas-demanding markets in Europe and the Middle East
offers significant potential for resource development.
Several major energy companies,
including Chevron, BP, Shell, and Eni, possess assets and active exploration
programs in the eastern Mediterranean.
ExxonMobil entered the Maraquia block in 2019 and subsequently sold a 40% stake to QatarEnergy in 2022. The company's statement noted that the well was drilled using the "DS-9" drilling rig, owned by Valaris Ltd.
